Postcards from Africa

Today I was updating the master postcard list and figured that I’d open it up to all my blog readers, friends and blogstalkers. Let me know if you want me to send you a postcard – email me at nick@whereishawkins.com with your address and I will send one.

Update: If you’re already on the Nick postcard list (like Karen, Melina, Jackie, and Tim are), there’s no need to tell me because I’ll just include you anyway unless you tell me to go and get bent. I don’t mind adding new people to the list.

I need $11,000 for books

Well, possibly more:

First things first, I’d love to buy the Cambridge Ancient History set of books for my 30th birthday. I figure that’s decades of reading and a heirloom.

Second, Amazon has the Penguin Classics Library Complete Collection. Only $7989.99, but you get 1,082 books.

And the Harvard Classics and the Harvard Classics Shelf of Fiction would be nice too.

The cruelist thing to have said to you is…

“I think we should just be friends.” :(

Fucking iPods

I got my replacement for my replacement from Apple on Friday, and have been unable to reformat the iPod for Windows so I can dump my mp3s back on it. Fuck. I tried calling support but after waiting for 20 minutes and getting an offshore support company, I just gave up and will try to format it at work on Monday and then call Apple and see what’s wrong.

White Sox Pride

A new addition to my RSS feeds is the White Sox Pride blog written by one of the Chicago White Sox‘ VPs. It’s actually a good blog because it’s unofficial and yet corporate, with starting lineups and ballpark tips.

The word for today is

Sisyphean. You know, when you work on something for a few weeks and am not listened to about it and have exhausted all avenues and gone above and beyond what you’re supposed to do? Futility? We’ve heard of it.

49 More Days!

A few interesting things have happened in the last few days:

1) I forgot to mention that Amazon a few weeks ago cancelled my order for the gross of Leatherman Wave’s. I hate them.
2) I get nervous when pretty girls at the office ask me to lunch.
3) My new boss asked me about blogs yesterday. My first reaction was oh great, not only did he find my blog, but all my old posts to alt.tasteless. Great. No, no, he says – he asked my input on a potential corporate blogging policy. I said that it’s more common sense – don’t talk smack about your employer if you still wish to get paid (better yet, don’t mention them by name), don’t be a dumbass and don’t post incrimating photos of yourself at work. For example, if you work in a hospital, don’t post pictures like this.
4) I have 49 days until I leave for Africa. I’m happy that I get to spend 28 hours door to door traveling through a total of 4 airports/countries (ORD, YYZ, LHR and NBO). But I get to spend about 14 hours flying sitting in this kind of seat on British Airways. First class snobbery, I tell you. But I should have amenity kits to give away along with other stuff I steal from the airplane. And BA First pajamas.

And I still have a Kilimanjaro blog, which I might as well just kill off and post all of that crap on here. Thoughts?

This is where we are staying two nights. What do you think?

Random Netflix films I have seen over the last week or so

Rashomon: Not too bad. It was different.
The Longest Day: How can you not like a war movie with John Wayne?
Bat 21: It was a lot cooler when I was 11 but now it just sucked.
The Statement: Hurray for movies about killing French-Nazi collaborators.
Smiley’s People: John Le Carre mini series with Alec Guinness and Patrick Stewart. Makes me miss the cold war.
Honey: It was ok. Mildly entertaining.
The Taking of Pelham One Two Three: You could see where Tarantino gets his influence.
Rebel Without a Cause: Apparently I missed something because this movie sucked. It was about a whiny James Dean, some pussy dudes at his school and some stalker that looked like Fez from The 70′s Show.

The Hawkins 7: I didn’t feel like posting for a while

I took some time off out of sheer laziness.

1) I posted the Toronto pictures up. Nothing exciting. Most are captioned.
2) My article in PocketPC Magazine finally got published.
3) A personal ad, Mad Libs style, might be next up my alley. It’ll be open for all input so it’ll be quite fun.
4) I took new pictures from the roof, mainly to test out the DSLR.
5) London’s calling me again. I had a friend move from Golders Green to Finchley and I might have to make an event out of trashing people’s new condos (first Indy, now London).
6) I don’t get on a damn plane for 54 more days. :(
7) Work sucks, but what do you expect? Let me rephrase: I like working, I don’t like being at work. I like most of the people I work with but there are the small minority that make it unbearable.
