This is generally the time of year where the technology toys come out. Macworld had the debut of the iPhone. Everyone seems to have a hardon for the iPhone but I remain skeptical. I mean, don’t get me wrong, it looks sexy, but it’s not the phone for me. Here’s why:
1) No Exchange support. While this doesn’t look quite like a business phone, it still would be cool to rock the house in meetings and ditch my Blackberry.
2) Price. $499 for a 4GB one and $599 for a 8GB one? Yes, I know other phones at launch are roughly the same price but Apple doesn’t seem like they’d be able to hold the price down 3 months after launch.
3) Locked to Cingular. How about showing us fellow GSMers some love? Sure, the enhanced voicemail things are cool, but who keeps 1800 voice mail messages? I listen to one, delete it and on the rare occasion, I save it.
4) EDGE. C’mon – if it’s on Cingular, couldn’t you go slightly faster with HSPDA? EDGE is barely tolerable on my Blackberry or MDA.
5) No 3rd party apps. That’s what makes smartphones that much smarter – the fact that any coder can whip up some killer apps. All my favorite apps for my MDA are written by small companies or hobbyists.
The funny thing to me is that I’m bashing Apple while I write this on my MacBook while transcoding some videos for my iPod.
It’s Nerd Thursday!
